1. Need to know structures and functions of systems
2. Basic body organization terminology
Structures and Functions - Respiratory System
β Function
β Responsible for taking in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide
β Maintains pH in blood
β Structure
β Nose - external opening to respiratory system
β Nostrils - leads to nasal cavity
β Mouth
β Throat - tube that goes down nose to esophagus
β Larynx - voice box, located at top of trachea
β Trachea - windpipe, from larynx to bronchi
β Bronchi - two main tubes from trachea to lungs
β Bronchioles - smaller tubes that branch off and lead to alveoli
β Alveoli - little sacks at end of bronchioles, gas exchange takes place here (grape clusters)
β Lungs
β Left lung - 2 sections, heart sits right next to it
β Right lung - 3 sections
Structures and Functions - Cardiovascular System
β Function
β Pumps blood throughout the body
β Maintains body's blood pressure
β Regulates body temperature - vessels constrict to maintain heat
β Maintaining the body's pH - maintains acid from blood
β Transporting hormones, fighting infections, aiding in digestion, assisting in repair of
damages tissues
β Structure
β Heart
β Blood vessels
β Right Atrium
