Structures and Functions - Respiratory System
● Function
○ Responsible for taking in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide
○ Maintains pH in blood
● Structure
○ Nose - external opening to respiratory system
○ Nostrils - leads to nasal cavity
○ Mouth
○ Throat - tube that goes down nose to esophagus
○ Larynx - voice box, located at top of trachea
○ Trachea - windpipe, from larynx to bronchi
○ Bronchi - two main tubes from trachea to lungs
○ Bronchioles - smaller tubes that branch off and lead to alveoli
○ Alveoli - little sacks at end of bronchioles, gas exchange takes place here (grape clusters)
○ Lungs
■ Left lung - 2 sections, heart sits right next to it
■ Right lung - 3 sections
Structures and Functions - Cardiovascular System
● Function
○ Pumps blood throughout the body
○ Maintains body's blood pressure
○ Regulates body temperature - vessels constrict to maintain heat
○ Maintaining the body's pH - maintains acid from blood
○ Transporting hormones, fighting infections, aiding in digestion, assisting in repair of
damages tissues
